ALDBURGH INSPIRES YET AGAIN If you have any doubts that Aldburgh is an inspiring place, you need look no further than Suffolk’s filmmaker, Christopher Newson, latest artistic film. “Suffolk Scallop Storm” cleverly combines Aldburgh beach, stormy seas and skies; Maggi Hambling’s passionate sketching, while sitting on the beach in a blustery wind, her impressive sculpture The Scallop and Benjamin Britten’s atmospheric music, The Storm. It seems as if all the elements here are acting to the music whereas, of course, it is Chris Newson’s imaginative film editing which creates this impression. The Scallop has inspired Chris in many ways – even to using it as a backdrop on which to project his films – and his latest work is his tribute to Maggi Hambling and as such has been very well received. It is the culmination of his work at Aldeburgh over the past few months and is truly both inspired and inspirational. Ida Jones.
